Tours to Delhi
|
Delhi,
lying on the western end of the Gangetic plain and drained
by River Yamuna, is the capital and the third largest city
of India. On Tours to Delhi, witness the healthy blend of
the ancient, the medieval, the colonial and the contemporary
architecture as you pass through the ruins and remains of
the eight cities of Delhi. The earliest history of Delhi can
be traced to the period of Mahabharata when the Pandavas established
their capital Indraprastha at Delhi in c.1450 BC. The archaeological
excavations have proved their capital to be at the Old Fort
area.
On Tours to Delhi, visit the ruins of the Qila-I-Rai Pithora,
the first city of Delhi. Lal Kot, the capital of the Tomars
was established by Anangpal I in about 731 AD and rebuilt
by Anangpal II in 11th century AD. Prithviraj Chauhan extended
the old city of Lal Kot with ramparts and moat and named it
Qila-I-Rai Pithora. The second city of Delhi was the city
of Siri established by Ala-ud-Din Khilji in 1311 AD. Only
the ruins of the once elaborate fort, palace and buildings
are left.
The third city of Delhi, Tughlaqabad built by Ghazi Malik,
famous as Ghiyas-ud-Din on Tours to Delhi. On tours to Delhi,
check out the invincible fort with slanting walls, zigzag
pathways, double-storeyed bastions, gigantic towers, palaces,
mosques, audience halls and the tomb of Ghiyas-ud-Din Tughlaq.
Firoz Shah Tughlaq built Firuzabad, the fourth city of Delhi
in 1351 AD. The ruins of the bastions of the citadel known
as Firoz Shah Kpotla can still be seen standing intact.
Humayun founded the fifth city of Delhi, Dinpanah or the Refuge
of the Faithful in 1533 AD. The Old Fort was the citadel of
the city. The Afghan King Sher Shah Suri renamed the fort
as Shergarh. Visit the Qila-I-Kuhna Masjid constructed by
Sher Shah in 1541 AD and the Sher Mandal within the Old Fort
on Tours to Delhi. The sixth and the most imposing capital
of Delhi was the Shahjahanabad built by the Mughal Emperor
in 1648 AD, Shah Jahan. The magnificent Red Fort with some
of the most beautiful buildings within it and Chandini Chowk
were the part of the new capital city.
The British selected the Raisina Hill to built their capital
when they shifted their capital from Calcutta in 1931 AD.
They called the seventh city of Delhi as New Delhi. The services
of Sir Edwin Lutyens were taken to design the new city. Do
visit the India Gate, the North and the South Block and Rashtrapati
Bhawan on Tours to Delhi. After India gained independence
in 1947, New Delhi was retained as the eighth capital of Delhi.
Delhi has developed into a metropolitan city with its boundaries
far beyond the ones planned earlier. It is difficult to divide
the city according to its historical development because the
old parts of the cities have been incorporated into the new
ones or have been re-developed. For convenience, the city
is now divided according to the regions like north, south,
east and west.
Delhi is an interesting place with lots of tourist attractions.
On Tours to Delhi, visit the Qutub Complex, Humayun's Tomb,
